Hazelnuts originated in wild trees in Asia and Europe and have
a long history of humans eating the nut in the wild since the earliest
times. Hazelnuts have also been known as Cob, and the cultivated
varieties, which are bigger, are now called filberts. The filberts were
developed from the species of hazel nuts from SE Europe. The filberts
are used often in sweet and savory dishes and stews. The hazelnut now
has been ground and made into hazelnuts flour, oil and hazelnut butter, and added to coffee.
Filberts are lower in fat than most of the nut family and
nutritionally, 100g. hazel nuts will yeild 7.6g. protein and will not
present a fat problem in salads, or bake shop cookies or cakes.
